PUNTA GORDA — After years of being the lone commercial carrier at Punta Gorda Airport, Allegiant Air now has a competitor for leisure travelers: Frontier Airlines.
Denver-based Frontier announced plans to begin service between Punta Gorda, in Charlotte County, and three cities: Chicago, Philadelphia and Trenton, N.J. The Chicago and Philadelphia flights will run Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, according to a release, while flights to Trenton, the state capital, will run Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Service to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and Philadelphia debuts Oct. 30, and service to Trenton begins Oct. 31. In addition to Punta Gorda, Frontier is also adding a flight from West Palm Brach to O'Hare.
“Punta Gorda offers travelers another great option when looking for warm weather getaways during the cold weather months in the northern part of the United States,” Frontier Airlines Senior Vice President - Commercial Daniel Shurz says in release. “We're excited to offer travelers in the Midwest and on the East Coast non-stop service to a great vacation spot.”
On the Gulf Coast, Frontier serves passengers in Tampa and Fort Myers. Like Allegiant, Frontier's model is no-frills flying and low cost tickets. Allegiant flies to 30 cities from Punta Gorda Airport. The fast-growing airport is on track to reach 1 million passengers this year and recently opened a new terminal building.
