FORT MYERS — Silver Airways plans to start flying nonstop from Fort Myers and Tampa to Nassau, Bahamas, starting in May.

The Fort Lauderdale-based airline will fly one daily nonstop from Tampa to Nassau and three times a week from Fort Myers to Nassau. The airline hinted it might also start offering service to Cuba in the future.

“We are looking forward to continuing our commitment to serving travelers by growing our core markets in Florida and the Bahamas,” says Silver Airways President and CEO Sami Teittinen, in a statement. “We are also excited about Silver's future continued expansion as we anticipate the U.S. and Cuba governments signing the bilateral agreement, which will open additional opportunities for scheduled service in the Caribbean and Cuba.”

Silver operates a fleet of 22 fuel-efficient, 34-seat Saab 340B Plus turbo-prop aircraft. From Tampa, Silver currently offers nonstop service to Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Key West, Palm Beach, Panama City, Pensacola, Tallahassee and Marsh Harbour (Abacos). From Fort Myers, Silver currently offers nonstop service to Orlando and Key West.

“One of our key air service development initiatives has been to attract service to the Bahamas and these new flights will directly link our region to this popular travel destination for the very first time,” says Robert Ball, executive director of the Lee County Port Authority, in a statement.
